Nestled in Dzūkija National Park, the Spring of Boba's Garden, also known as the Skroblus Springs, is one of the most unique and enchanting places in Lithuania. This site not only captivates with its natural beauty but also exudes an air of mystery, enriched by local legends and tales of ancient traditions.

Geographical Location and Origins of the Spring

The Spring of Boba's Garden is situated in the village of Margionys, Varėna District, within the Dzūkija National Park. Its exact coordinates are 53.999654, 24.300797. This spring serves as the source of the Skroblus River, Lithuania's shortest river, which stretches only 17.3 kilometers.

Despite its modest length, the Skroblus is remarkable for its water volume. Approximately 8 liters of water per second flow from the spring, while the river contributes up to 700 liters per second to the Merkys River.

The Skroblus is not only notable for its abundant water but also for its breathtaking landscapes. The river winds through forests, meadows, and marshes, creating one of the most picturesque natural scenes in Dzūkija.

A 12.4-kilometer hiking trail connects the villages of Margionys and Kapiniškės, beginning at the spring’s source in Margionys. The trail passes through scenic areas of Dzūkija National Park, offering visitors a chance to experience both the magic of the Skroblus source and the beauty of the surrounding nature.

The trail is designed to accommodate both active hikers and families with children. Wooden footbridges, staircases, and pavilions ensure a comfortable and safe exploration of the area. Along the route, informational boards provide insights into the Skroblus springs and their ecological and cultural significance.

Natural Value and Environment

The area surrounding the Spring of Boba's Garden is a true natural oasis. The water from the spring is fresh, crystal clear, odorless, and exceptionally suitable for drinking. Its chemical composition reveals that it is free from iron and nitrites, with nitrates present only in minimal amounts (7.03 mg/l). The water temperature remains constant throughout the year, at approximately 7.4°C.

The spring is located within a thermokarst depression, where the slopes are covered in grasses and the bottom is marshy. Wooden footbridges lead visitors directly to the center of the spring, allowing them to admire its pristine natural beauty.

Folklore and Legends

Local residents share numerous legends about the Spring of Boba's Garden. One popular tale recounts how the women of Margionys village would “draw” children from the spring, believing it to be a place where new life was born. The spring was considered not only a source of life but also a healing place. It is said that people washed their eyes in the spring’s water, hoping it would cure various ailments.

The spring was also known as “burbaklės” due to the small depressions at the bottom of the spring from which water bubbles up. These bubbling springs were regarded as sacred in ancient times and attracted the local community for their perceived mystical and healing properties.

How to Reach the Spring of Boba's Garden

The Spring of Boba's Garden is easily accessible by traveling to the village of Margionys, located within the Dzūkija National Park. The journey can begin from Vilnius or other cities by public transport—train or bus—to Marcinkonys. This is the most convenient point to start the trip on foot or by bike. From Marcinkonys, scenic forest roads and trails lead to the spring, allowing visitors to enjoy the tranquil beauty of Dzūkija’s nature along the way.
