Discoveries of the Anykščiai Region with the 'MyTravis' Team: Sights, Impressions, and Tips

On November 16, 2024, the "MyTravis" team embarked on a journey through the stunning Anykščiai region – a place renowned for its impressive legends, unique nature, and rich culture. The goal of this trip was to explore the region, its landmarks, and share the experience with other travelers.

Bijeikiai Viewing Tower and Hillfort – Panoramic Views of Rubikiai Lake
Our first stop was the Bijeikiai Viewing Tower, located near Rubikiai Lake. Although the tower is not very tall, it offers breathtaking views. Not only can you see the vastness of the lake, but also the surrounding villages of Burbiškis and Mačioniai, with the church towers of Leliūnai and Debeikiai visible in the distance. This spot will appeal even to those afraid of heights – the views truly make up for any fear.
Nearby, the Bijeikiai Hillfort stands as a unique historical site surrounded by Rubikiai and Dusynas Lakes. Archaeological research has revealed that ancient communities once lived here. Findings, such as molded pottery and other household items, are now kept at the National Museum of Lithuania. This is a great place for history and nature enthusiasts.

Burbiškis Manor – A Blend of History and Modernity
Next, we visited Burbiškis Manor, one of the most beautiful heritage sites in the Anykščiai region. First mentioned in the 17th century, the manor was owned by various historical figures before becoming a modern tourism center.
Today, the manor is a cultural and event space hosting tours, art workshops, concerts, and even tastings. Restored according to an authentic design, the ensemble charms both history buffs and modern culture enthusiasts. The nearby chapel-mausoleum, though destroyed during World War I, has been completely restored and adapted for intimate events.

Liudiškiai Hillfort – A Symbol of Ancient Defense
One of the places we visited was the Liudiškiai Hillfort, considered a valuable archaeological monument. This hillfort is located at the edge of the upper terrace of the Šventoji River, on the highest part of a hill. The oval-shaped area is surrounded by impressive slopes, reaching up to 17 meters in height.
Archaeologists have discovered remnants of an ancient settlement here, including rough and incised pottery fragments and parts of a wooden defensive wall with a stone pavement. These findings indicate that a wooden castle stood on the hillfort during the 3rd to 5th centuries, protecting the local inhabitants from enemies.

Jewish Holocaust Memorial – A Sad Lesson of History
We also visited the Holocaust victims' memorial located at the edge of a forest near the town of Anykščiai. In 1941, about 1,500 Jewish people were murdered here. The grave is marked by a memorial stone with inscriptions in Hebrew and Lithuanian. The path leading to this site is paved with field stones – a symbolic reference to a tragic past.
This place is not only a testimony to the brutal past but also an important educational space, encouraging reflection on historical lessons and human values.

Jonas Biliūnas' Grave and the "Beacon of Happiness" – A Harmony of Literature and Nature
At the top of Liudiškiai Hill stands Jonas Biliūnas' grave, marked by an impressive monument called the "Beacon of Happiness." This spot, once referred to as Anykščiai's "Sahara," is where history, literature, and nature converge. The writer's remains were relocated here from Zakopane in 1953, and in 1958, a 14-meter-high monument designed by architect Vytautas Gabriūnas was erected above the grave.
This site allows visitors to feel as though they are part of Biliūnas' tale "Beacon of Happiness," where the legendary inscription invites people to climb to the top, share happiness, and give meaning to their own lives.

Historical and Architectural Treasures in the City Center
We continued our journey in the town of Anykščiai, starting at the viewing platform on A. Vienuolis Street, which offers a wonderful panorama of the town. From here, the view is directed toward the Church of St. Matthew – the tallest Catholic church in Lithuania, with towers reaching 79 meters. This neo-Gothic structure, built between 1899 and 1909, houses valuable art pieces collected by the long-serving parish priest, Monsignor Albertas Talačka. The church’s viewing platform, located 30 meters above the ground, offers a unique opportunity to admire the town and surrounding views.
Just a few minutes' walk from the church is Bishop's Square, dedicated to the poet Antanas Baranauskas. A striking monument created by sculptor Arūnas Sakalauskas stands here, becoming a location for various cultural and religious events. Nearby, you can also find the monument to Antanas Vienuolis, commemorating his contribution to Lithuanian literature.

The Harmony of Culture and Nature in Anykščiai Forest
Next, we headed to Anykščiai Forest, where we encountered the legendary Puntuko Stone – one of the largest boulders in Lithuania. This natural and historical monument is famous for the bas-reliefs of pilots Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas, as well as their words engraved on the granite surface.
Near the stone is a park of wooden sculptures, which features the impressive 25.11-meter-tall sculpture "Eglė the Queen of Serpents." This artwork, listed in the Guinness World Records, is a true marvel of technique and creativity, built without any metal supports.
