Justinas Marcinkevičius was a renowned Lithuanian poet, prose writer, dramatist, and translator, born in Važatkiemis, Prienai District. His work, especially during the post-war period, is known for its sensitive portrayal of childhood spent in the Lithuanian countryside, reflections on first love, and the relationship between humans and nature. Marcinkevičius published over a hundred books and often invited his fellow countrymen to his new work presentations, where they were among the first to hear his latest poetry.
His memory lives on in Prienai with the creation of the Justinas Marcinkevičius Leisure Space in 2021. Visitors can sit on benches beside a path adorned with the poet’s verses, reflecting on his work or finding inspiration for their own poetry.
