The Getautė Hillfort, located 0.9 km west of the Telšiai-Varnių road and 0.5 km from the Viešė Stream crossing, is one of the most significant historical sites in Samogitia. The hillfort covers an area of about 5.5 hectares and it is believed that in 1253, the Kuršių fortress Viešvė stood here. The hillfort is protected by the state and attracts both history enthusiasts and nature lovers. Local legends say that the hill was formed by giants who carried soil in their hands. Another legend claims that
the Swedes had built underground chambers at the hillfort to store valuables and food supplies. In ancient times, there was a cave leading to the mountain’s cellars. On the eastern side of the hillfort, near the Telšiai-Varnių road, is Gojus—a hill covered with trees, which is believed to have been a ritual site. The nearby Viešė Stream was considered a sacred brook, and Gojus Hill is associated with ancient sacred groves typical of hillfort cultures. This area traditionally hosts car rally races.
