Moteraičio Hillfort

Moteraičio Hillfort, located just 1.05 km from the Pavandenė Church of St. Anne, rises 218.2 meters above sea level. This hillfort is notable for its shape, which resembles a reclining woman from a distance. At the top of the hill stands a wooden cross, and nearby are Lake Glūdas and the Janapolė-Bubiai road. The hillfort, with its four distinct mounds, was an important center for Baltic defense and cult practices, as well as part of the Samogitian defensive system.
According to legends, in ancient times, women would gather on this hill to bid farewell to their husbands going to war. In the underground chambers, defenders of the land would hide women and children from enemies. This hillfort is one of many that functioned as part of a signaling system – upon detecting danger, defenders would light fires at night to send messages to other fortresses.
