In the historic village of Medininkai, shortly after the Christianization of Lithuania in 1387, the Grand Duke of Lithuania and King of Poland, Władysław II Jagiełło – the first representative of the Jagiellonian dynasty – established a parish. Although the current Church of the Holy Trinity and St. Casimir, built in 1930, is a masterpiece of later creation, several churches and chapels previously stood in this area. As early as 1391, based on a privilege granted by Jogaila, Augustinian monks established a church and monastery in Medininkai, which for many decades became the heart of the parish. However, in 1831, due to the pressure of the Tsarist regime, the Augustinians were forced to leave, and the parish was dispersed. Today, the Church of the Holy Trinity and St. Casimir is maintained by Franciscan monks who, after Father Kamil Wielemanski returned from exile
in 1961, established their community here, joining local and foreign brothers. The church, consecrated in 1791 in honor of the Holy Trinity, is distinguished by its unique wooden architecture and historical content. From the first altars to the luxurious gold and carvings décor, this sanctuary is an authentic testament to the development of local culture and spirituality. Additionally, in 1917, the status of the Medininkai parish was restored, and a temporary St. Casimir Chapel was built. Today, this site, featuring a rectangular plan and decorated with historical artworks, including 18th-century organs and an image of St. Casimir, invites visitors to delve into its rich past. Despite its history of several reconstructions, the Medininkai Church retains its cultural and spiritual heritage, attracting not only believers but also enthusiasts of history and art.
